The canton in brief

Construction in the canton of Solothurn: what the register shows.

Construction is the sector that creates and strikes off the most companies: general contractors, structural work, finishing trades, installers. A new registration almost always means an immediate need for insurance, equipment leasing, fiduciary services and labour.

This sector accounts for 11 % of companies classified in the canton of Solothurn, against 9 % across Switzerland. 9 companies in construction were registered in the canton of Solothurn over the past 30 days, 26 over 90 days.

Solothurn is an industrial canton: watchmaking and microtechnology in Grenchen and Solothurn, mechanical and metal engineering in the Niederamt and around Olten, and logistics around Olten and Egerkingen at the motorway junction. Industrial SMEs dominate, supported by fiduciaries and engineering firms.

The sector

Construction in Switzerland: what you need to know

Swiss construction counts 52,621 establishments and 368,971 jobs, an SME fabric dominated by finishing trades. After two flat years the sector grew again in 2025 (construction spending up 3.2%), driven by a historic housing shortage, low interest rates and a well filled public order book.

The market at a glance

Swiss construction splits into three NOGA divisions. Building construction (41) holds 9,810 establishments and 87,863 jobs, civil engineering (42) remains a narrow club of 1,189 establishments and 24,266 jobs, and specialised construction works (43) form the bulk with 41,622 establishments and 256,842 jobs, according to the Federal Statistical Office STATENT 2024 business census.

That imbalance shapes any sales approach: nearly eight in ten establishments are finishing trade firms (electrical, plumbing, heating, plastering, joinery, tiling, facades), typically five to thirty people and an owner who decides alone. The large general contractors (Implenia, Marti, Losinger Marazzi, Steiner, HRS, Frutiger, ERNE) win the structural work and pass a large share of the volume down to subcontractors.

Geographically, Zurich (7,394 establishments, 54,845 jobs), Bern (5,601 and 42,111), Vaud (4,910 and 31,451), Aargau (4,044 and 26,455), Ticino (3,287 and 20,040) and St. Gallen (3,276 and 23,601) form the core.

2024-2026 dynamics

After a trough in 2024 (construction spending down 0.6% according to the Federal Statistical Office, with building falling and civil engineering rising), the recovery was confirmed in 2025: provisional results show construction spending up 3.2% and construction investment up 3.5%, with conversion and extension work (+3.5%) pulling as hard as new build (+3.4%).

The main construction sector posted turnover of CHF 23.9 billion in 2025, 2.1% above 2024, and the Swiss Contractors Association expects around CHF 24.4 billion in 2026. Housing is the engine: residential orders rose 11% in 2025. Public demand remains solid, with public construction spending up 5.2% and public construction investment up 6.7% over the year.

The real bottleneck is labour and land, not demand. The vacant dwelling rate fell to 0.93% on 1 June 2026, meaning 45,493 homes across Switzerland, with Zug at 0.20%, Geneva at 0.31% and Zurich at 0.52%: objections, permit timelines and land availability weigh more than financing. The new national agreement for 2026 to 2031 stabilises the wage framework for six years but raises the payroll over its term.

Framework and players

Construction law is cantonal and communal: every canton has its own building act, zoning plans and permit procedures, which is why timelines differ sharply between Zurich, Geneva and Valais. Technical standards come from the professional bodies: SIA norms and the CAN standard item catalogue used for tenders.

Social partners structure the sector to a degree rare in Europe. The national collective agreement for main construction, negotiated between the Swiss Contractors Association and the Unia and Syna unions, is declared generally binding and sets minimum wages, annualised hours and early retirement from age 60. Joint commissions inspect sites, Suva handles accident prevention and trade funds administer contributions.

On the client side, public bodies dominate: the Swiss Federal Railways, the Federal Roads Office, armasuisse, cantonal building and civil engineering offices, cities, pension funds and large institutional real estate investors. Public contracts run through simap.ch, under the revised federal public procurement act and the intercantonal AIMP agreement, which weight quality and sustainability more heavily than price alone.

Prospecting angle

Who buys what: finishing trade firms buy materials and site equipment, commercial vehicles, plant hire, measurement and invoicing software, accounting and fiduciary services, recruitment and staff leasing. General contractors and developers buy engineering, geotechnics, surveying, BIM planning, construction insurance, financing and project management.

Signals to watch: municipal building permits announce activity six to eighteen months ahead, simap.ch reveals who won a main lot and therefore its future subcontractors, and job postings for site managers betray a filling order book.

How ciblr helps: isolate by canton and NOGA division the firms with 5 to 49 employees that form the addressable core of the finishing trades, spot recent commercial register entries for a first approach before the incumbent supplier settles in, and combine size, location and sub-sector to build a prospecting list that follows the real geography of building sites rather than the administrative map.
